Martina McBride - Greatest HitsIn the abstract, there are two Martina McBrides heard in this ample collection, which features 14 hits from the Kansas-born singer's studio albums, along with four inspired new cuts. At one extreme there's the demure cover-girl-pretty warbler who serves up fervent and endearing love pledges like "Wild Angels," "Safe in the Arms of Love," and "I Love You." Then there's the mature, poised, socially conscious mother of two who grapples with darker topics like poverty and inequality ("Love's the Only House") and child and spousal abuse (the wrathful "Independence Day" and the ineffably sad "Concrete Angel"). There are certainly impressive samples of both Martinas on this anthology. On other cuts--like the bluesy, naughty new track "When God-Fearin' Women Get the Blues" and the angry "Life #9"--the forces of light and darkness, anger and felicity, commingle in a manner that's no less intriguing and provocative. --Bob Allen

Bobby ValentinoBobby Valentino, the first artist signed to Ludacris' Disturbing Tha Peace label, aims to inhabit the smooth-daddy lothario vacancy left in R&B by the long-absent R. Kelly (who, in his day, filled it for Luther Vandross, who filled it for Barry White). Though he lacks the vocal heat and instant magnetism of all those artists, there's a lot to like on this debut, the over-the-top attempts to insinuate himself into the fantasies of the opposite sex especially. The song titlesshameless to a one say it all: "Lights Down Low," "Come Touch Me," "One Girl To Love." Subject matter aside, Valentino busts out a swoony vocal gift that, if not the stuff of legends, should serve him well on the R&B charts: shades of Stevie Wonder swim through "I'll Forgive You," a Winans influence wanders in on "Love Dream," and an old-school Coolio-style rap raises an edge around "Give Me A Chance." "Gangsta Love," with its "coke-bottle body/likes to get naughty" lyric, is a slimly veiled ode to freakiness, and it flicks up the fun factor. --Tammy La Gorce
Liberace Box Set (Leapin' Lizards It's Liberace, Liberace's Valentine's Day Special, and Live With the London Philharmonic) [VHS]
First Knight [VHS]1995 had already seen the box-office success of sword-wielding heroes in Rob Roy and Braveheart when along came this glossy revision of the Arthurian legend, in which Lady Guinevere (Julia Ormond) is torn between her love for the noble King Arthur (Sean Connery) and the passionate knight Sir Lancelot (Richard Gere). As the story opens, Guinevere's lands are under attack by the evil knight Malagant (Ben Cross), and she must choose between marriage to Arthur and the security of Camelot, or encouraging the affections of Lancelot, who has heroically rescued her from a potentially lethal attack. Anyone looking for meticulous medieval authenticity won't find it here, but director Jerry Zucker (Ghost) keeps the action moving with exuberant spirit and glorious production values. Even if you don't completely believe Richard Gere as a somewhat too-contemporary Lancelot, the performances of Ormond and especially Connery are effortlessly appealing. --Jeff Shannon
