Valentine GiftRCA was never at a loss repackaging Elvis Presley material even during the King's lifetime--and it's only accelerated since his death. This 1985 compilation of '50s and '60s ballads, both bluesy and soft, comes from a period when the label was assembling theme compilations, the concept behind this one obviously being love. And it covers all those contradictory Presley bases--that is, love in all its forms--from raw sex ("Fever," "It Feels So Right") to rejection (the wonderful "I Was the One," "Are You Lonesome Tonight?") to his stock-in-trade sincere tenderness (a majority of the tracks here, including, of course, the obligatory "Can't Help Fallin' in Love"). "Fame and Fortune" remains one of his greatest post-Army ballads, and his underrated version of Kitty Lester's "Love Letters" matches the original--but the major buzz at the time of this release was the inclusion here of Dylan's "Tomorrow Is a Long Time," previously available only as a bonus cut on the dreadful Spinout! soundtrack. As Dylan related to an interviewer, this is the cover version of his own material that he has "treasured the most." --Bill Holdship

First Knight [VHS]1995 had already seen the box-office success of sword-wielding heroes in Rob Roy and Braveheart when along came this glossy revision of the Arthurian legend, in which Lady Guinevere (Julia Ormond) is torn between her love for the noble King Arthur (Sean Connery) and the passionate knight Sir Lancelot (Richard Gere). As the story opens, Guinevere's lands are under attack by the evil knight Malagant (Ben Cross), and she must choose between marriage to Arthur and the security of Camelot, or encouraging the affections of Lancelot, who has heroically rescued her from a potentially lethal attack. Anyone looking for meticulous medieval authenticity won't find it here, but director Jerry Zucker (Ghost) keeps the action moving with exuberant spirit and glorious production values. Even if you don't completely believe Richard Gere as a somewhat too-contemporary Lancelot, the performances of Ormond and especially Connery are effortlessly appealing. --Jeff Shannon

This CD is essential listening, and not just for doo wop fans or fans of the Valentines -- running through it, you can also hear the sonic and stylistic model that Valentines member Richard Barrett used (in tandem with house bandleader Jimmy Wright) when he brought Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers into the recording studio to cut their first record in 1956. Just on its own terms, this CD has 15 of the best songs ever cut in the doo wop genre, running the gamut from driving rhythm numbers to elegant ballads ("Twenty Minutes," "Don't Say Goodnight"). Six of them -- "Lily Maebelle," "I'll Never Let You Go," "The Joe Smith Theme," "Sweetheart of Mine," "I Love You Darling," and "Woo Woo Train" -- are worth the price of the disc by themselves, viscerally exciting sides that radiate a joy on the part of the singers and players 50 years later. Among the sidemen, saxophonist Jimmy Wright outdid himself with the screaming, soaring sax solo on "Woo Woo Train." The mid-tempo dance ballad "K-I-S-S Me" offers a hot band sound against a sultry singing of the group and a seductively playful lyric; Wright and his guitar player also make their presence felt in a tasteful yet bracing manner on the stunningly haunting ballad "I Love You Darling"; and the achingly beautiful ballad "Falling for You" displays a purity of conception and arrangement that anticipates the sound that Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers would achieve in the studio. The tie-in between the two groups is even closer than that -- in addition to bringing Barrett and the Valentines into the orbit of label owner George Goldner, "Lily Maebelle" was the song with which the Teenagers first attracted the attention of Barrett, who brought the newer group to Goldner.
